Brightest Day cover inks by INKIST Brightest Day cover inks by INKIST
I was far more interested in all the underwater stuff than I was on the Black Manta character this time. He's kind of got a goofy design. The coral was pretty fun though, and a lot of it was done with a sponge dipped in ink, dabbing here and their keeping in mind the planes and the light source. Texture is great, but the drawing fundamentals still have to come first.

This is such a great study in balance and technique for b/w, I'm gonna keep it in mind for my own stuff. Great job.

I agree with the underwater BG vs. the figure. It looks like it was a lot more fun. Curious about your using a sponge, though. What kind of sponge? How did you retain control over it, since it seems like a sponge would inherently have a lot of randomness to it.

Just a basic dish sponge you buy at a grocery store. I cut into wedges so I can have some control about placement of ink, but the randomness you mention is a GOOD thing an part of the reason to use a sponge. They are great for trees and bushes too!

Black Manta is a goofy looking character, but you guys still managed to make him look cool. Those textures on the bottom are my fave though. I'd be curious to see how Finch pencilled in the bits you sponged in.

 Agreed Scott... background is all kinds of eyecandy.
Once I got done enjoying the BG elements, the eye traveled to the figure eventually... and you so brung your A-Game there too... beautiful textures and rendering throughout.

You know when I was a kid I always thought I was just stealing from Jim Lee, but the more I see your inks over other pencillers the more I realise I was really trying to rip you off just as much. You make all the artists you ink look twice as good and you don't get nearly as much of the glory.
