Kirby and Williams Black Bolt by INKIST Kirby and Williams Black Bolt by INKIST
Whether you like old school or not, there is one fact that is indisputable--KIRBY IS KING! Very intimidating ink job. I'm hoping that Kirby would not mind my adding a Cosmic background, but this piece screamed for Kirby-crackle! I'll post the pencils to compare.

You did a fabulous job with the background!!  It is very fitting for that ol' comic style and draws the eye right to the face! You are a master at your craft!!

I love the blending lines on this, they are superb :) Oh and how I love/miss the Kirby dots! I guess it's time to invest in some crowquill pens/nibs. I would love some insite on how you blend so well.

To say "nice job" is not enough. You took THE MASTERS work and gave it a GREAT 70's flair right down to the Cosmic background. :love:IT!!!!

I would like to add that I think the King would give you a thumbs up as well.

What a fun piece! There's NO way I'd be able to write an in depth critique, and for the love of god, who would attempt to do so to the greatest modern inker? :)

It's probably as intimidating as attempting to ink Kirby.

However, I will share the ONE thing that seems to break this wonderful piece up. Now, this is just one lowly peons personal preference:

The transition of the lines into space isn't sitting well with me. All of the Kirby crackle looks incredible and the lines as a transition from the sky seems too simple. I know it's in the pencils, but I personally would have liked to see more crackle. Maybe if it were added into the lines more to get a smoother transition from the sky to space. Getting cracklier as it went up :)

That's it, the only thing that I could possibly think of.

Now, please don't smite me :O!

Wonderful piece :)

I agree! I think the transition lines to outer space is the most boring, mechanical element in the piece. I definitely should have sexed it up some more. Still learning. Thanks!

Scott great job again! The King indeed would be proud! And yeah the background is MONEY! You hit the style perfectly! You once again proved you are not a one trick pony! You are a student of many artist, and proving you are a master of inkers (because you're always learning and challenging yourself, I would think).

Great job!

I think inking his work is all around fun. Like you said he is so stylized. I was afraid that translating it to digital I was going to screw it up bad, but I turned out half way decent.

Thanks Joe, and howdy! Yeah, inking Jack is just a blast, but it's tough too. He's so stylized that you have to use intuition rather than the more traditional rules that apply when inking anyone else. Thankfully, other artists who had success with inking Kirby have left the rest of us road maps to at least get started.

Absolutely. Yet, he could do that if he hadn't started with the more realistic style of his earlier art. People who try to mimic him don't get that.

excellent Kirby crackle too, minimal linework in the figure, I thought this would be non-intimidating,..if that's a term,...looks wonderful.

I saw this before the pencils and thought that the background was what Kirby actually did. Seeing what you added is a really nice touch, it actually does seem like a background Kirby could have made himself! You did a great job here man!
